Senior Political Leader of HAMAS
Ismail Haniyeh was born in 1963 in a refugee camp near Gaza City. He was educated in Arabic literature at the Gaza Islamic University and has headed the HAMAS Palestinian movement since the late 1990s. HAMAS stands for *Harakat Al-Muqawarma Al-Islamia* which means "Islamic Resistance Movement," and it is also a word meaning zeal. It mixes politics and violence towards establishing an Islamic state to replace Israel. The US, Canada, Japan, Israel, Jordan and the EU consider it to be a terrorist organization.
